Making Stirrups Temporarly shorter?
I am testing out a western saddle and I have really short lags, the stirrups will not go any shorter. I could punch holes but id rather not since its not my saddle. I was wondering if anyone new or could think of a way to make them shorter so I could go for a ride and test it out. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance!
There's a lot to learn by riding without stirrups. It'll improve your seat. We rode and rode well for thousands of years before stirrups were even invented.
Make sure to AVOID getting any of those dangerous contraptions for adding short stirrups for a child that somehow fit over the saddle.
Buy a different saddle, one with stirrups that'll fit right and that have ample opportunity for proper adjustment.
Study up on fitting a saddle, fitting to the horse and to you.

Stirrups, western or English. Which is better?
I've been told that English stirrups are meant to be on the ball of your foot where as in western films their stirrups are on the middle of their foot. I was just wondering why and which is safer and gives more control over the horse.
films do not correctly depict many things, and the way a person rides, is no different. no mater if you ride english or western, you should ride with your stirrups on the ball of your foot. it gives you better balance and a better range of motion, not necessarily more control of the horse. if you ride with the stirrup in the middle of your foot, you are more likely to get caught up in your stirrups if you were to bail off your horse, or get bucked off, resulting in you being dragged behind the horse. so its much safer to have the stirrups at the ball of your foot.
