What is riding in a spanish saddle like?
I know you neck rein for the most part, and it is closer to a western than an english saddle, but what else do I need to know? How is it for long distances? Is it comfortable? What type of leg positioning should you use? Toes out or toes forward? Closed calf, or open leg? Half seat, full seat, or all the way back on your tail bones?
I am going on a trek in southern spain and we will be riding doma vaquera in spanish saddles. Experience would be great!
PeaBee, thanks so much!! If you want to, feel free to email me. I am so excited for this trip!! You have no idea. I am planning on doing a video diary that will be up on youtube, so if your interested, I can get you the link.
We have several Peruvian and Spanish saddles we use for shows. They have the comforting feel of a "bucket" seat almost like a western saddle, free leg movement from an english, but are durable and comfortable for long rides. The sturrups are usually in a triangular shape with a large flap in the front that protects you from brush.
You usually ride it like a western saddle, long sturrips. Heels down, like a normal stirrup, but its enclosed usually so you won't even see your toes. This is so that your feet are protected and you naturally find your feet fitting correctly due to the fact that theres no where else for them to go.
Hope it helps, have loads of fun
