What to do with a mouthy/bold Quarter Horse?

I bought a 5 year old Quarter Horse about 3 years ago. He was underweight, had no muscle tone to him, and the was being improperly worked with a big heavy western saddle, too many pads, and a very strong bit. So of course when I first started working with him, he quickly became a friend and would do anything I asked. The next spring I had a trainer come up and she was asking him for too much, he didn't want to bend and listen to her cues but she insisted that he must do it for "conformation purposes". So after this we took a year off from training and just did trail riding competitions. I'd say with in the last 6 months or so, he's been acting bold and overpowering towards humans during ground work. He doesn't mind pushing you aside, or knocking you over. I've tried lunging him, and simply just mild workouts to get him to join up and show respect, but the next day it's all gone. We don't do anything strenuous that will make him irritated. Does anybody have anything that would work?!

You need to be firm with him. You have an area of personal space, say about 3feet around you and he is not allowed within that space unless invited. Put a rope halter on him as you have more control than a headcollar and every time he comes within your space, square up to him, look him in the eye and make him back off. Make it a lot of work for him to come within your space, but if he stands respectfully out of your way then give him some peace. You must always make him get out of your way, don't go around him.
I would also start increasing his general work load as it sounds like he's a bit bored. You don't have to ask for a lot of physical work, just what he can cope with but start teaching him different things so his mind is being occupied.

Most horses don't require you to be as strict, but he sounds like you need to be very firm and consistant with him so he understands that you are boss and he can't just barge through you. If he's really bad and in danger of hurting someone then carry a short stick and tap him if he barges into you - for instance if he swings his hindquaters into then firmly push him away and use the stick to tap his but enphasising you wishes. I don't mean hit him hard, but make sure he understands that you are boss. If he walks straight into you then use the stick to push his shoulders back and away from you.
My sister's cob is dreadful when food is around - he will literally try to walk through you. We taught him that he has to wait for us to go before he can get to his feed, so when I got into the stall I carry the feed behind me in one hand and use the other to push him back. I then put the feed down and continue to push him back slightly. Once he is standing and not trying to push me out the way, I then take the decesion to move to the side and he can then get his dinner. It does take time but now when you go in to the stall with his feed he backs off on his own and waits to be allowed his dinner - you don't need to push him back at all. But you have to be consistant with this for your horse to get the idea.

You also must not be soft on him because of his poor histroy. If you ask him to do something that he is physically capable of doing he must do it. If you have asked him to go somewhere then he must go there. If he resists then simply don't give him a choice. Don't get upset about it and don't try to physically make him do it cause you won't win a battle of who can push the hardest, but make it real hard work for him to do anything else, so make him go round in circles around you and the only place you let him stop is where you want him to be, this way he will come to realise that it is much easier to do what is being asked of him than to resist you.
A horse will not respond well to being bullied but go about asking him to do something quietly but firmly.

good luck

saddle knot????

I have just bought my first western saddle, and [how embarrasing],cannot figure how to do up the cinch,I have only ever used a girth. There must be a knack to it as All I have is a ring in the saddle and a really long strap of leather, is it kinda a pully system?

on the right side of the saddle there should be a O-ring with a double strap. The strap should have matching holes in it.
Your girth should have large rings on both ends. Take the Strap and pass it through one of the girth rings ...It should buckle (like a shoe).....
On the left side of the saddle (mounting side)....you should have a very long strap attached to the saddle O-ring. Take this long strap and loop it several times through the O-ring on the loose end of the girth.
Practice this on a calm experienced horse. Make sure everything is laying flat and smooth and is not pinching your horse. The center of the girth should be centered under your horse's belly once everything is tightened. If it's too short...adjust from the left side (change holes)....
Have an experienced rider check your "job" BEFORE riding. Don't be embarrassed if the adjust your work...this takes times to learn.
Check out a saddle website or magazine and make sure your saddle has everthing it should have !!!
