western in hand showmanship classes?
how can i teach my horse to pivot? i never seem to place in showmanship classes and i think it is because my horse doesn't know how to pivot. she is perfect on everything else. i went to a clinic with a certified judge and when we were focusing on halter classes she said the only thing i need to work on is pivoting, but i don't know how to teach my horse. when i tried the judges way, it didn't work. Help!!!!
i just taught my TB mare to pivot the other day, and she caught on rather quickly. a correct pivot leaves the right hind foot motionless. stand your horse square, and push with the shank away from you. watch her right hind foot. ask her for one step, and if she keeps that back foot on the ground, stop and praise her. if she moves it while you took that step, pop the shank just a bit and so a firm NO. she'll think "okay, that was wrong." then ask for another step. repeat this until she consistantly turns on that hind right without moving. then ask for two steps at a time and repeat the whole thing over. thank ask for three steps at a time. then eventually she'll be able to spin right around and dig a hole with that back right! 
just work with her in short intervals every day and she'll pick it up. just go slow and she'll get it. this is how i trained my champion showmanship horse to do it, and he'll whip right around like nothin' now! =]

How many western riders ride with two hands, when just riding for fun? ?
do more western riders prefer 1 handed or two (NOT while showing, obviously)
I think youre missing the point here with all the questions directed at specifics.
When riding western, it is expected that you ride one handed unless you have a green horse under five- in that case you can direct rein as it is generally easier for the horse to understand as it learns to neck rein. Western curb bits are designed to only be ridden one handed. It is in my opinion cruel to ride a horse in a curb bit with direct reining.
When you ride english, it's expected that you ride with two hands.
Of course, there is no one standing over you every minute of every ride telling you that you must neck rein, so you could conceivably ride with a direct rein, but it is not correct and often confusing to your horse. Like I said in your other question, you can technically ride however you choose, but you will never be considered a good rider in any serious equestrian circle if you insist on mixing and matching disciplines to avoid doing what 'isn't fun'. Why not learn both disciplines well, then when you feel like you want to fool around, throw a halter on your horse, neck rein, plow rein, use no reins at all. Jump bareback, ride sidesaddle, whatever, just don't make that the only understanding you have of riding.
I ride my horse however I feel. I do western and english, jumps and flat, dressage and barrels when I feel like it, but I know all of them well and dont just halfass it when I dont feel like being correct. There is nothing that says I cant take my horse out for a bareback gallop with no tack, and I do occasionally, but its not because I thats all I can do.
But, I suppose if you just want to plod around on a horse in someone's back yard and have absolutely no intention of ever riding any other horses or ever trying to train or sell horses, or compete or don't really care that much about advancing with horses you could stop your training and just do whatever the heck you like. There is a reason for separate disciplines. It's not just for showing, its for the well being of the horse.
