Anyone with experience dealing with bored dogs?
My dog Oro is a pit bull. I obtained him from a rescue group, who had gotten hold of him through a dog fighting ring raid. When I first got him he was sickly, malnourished, and had several health problems. Now that he's better and of good health it seems as though his behavior has changed tremendously, and not for the better.
I walk him several times a day, and try my best to play with him, but he doesn't seem to know how to play, at all. I know that his bad behavior comes from being bored, as all his other needs are met. The only type of 'play' he seems to know is wrestling/biting, and chewing random items. Ive provided him with several chew toys, kongs, large bones, squeaky toys etc.
The chew toys don't seem to be effective, nor do the long walks. He doesn't understand the concept of fetch, or tug rope or any other game that rewards him with a type of trophy.
Im at my wits end with his bad behaviour, does anyone have a suggestion on how I can better help my troubled dog?
I am so up about the training. It will build confidence in your dog, and learning different useful cues. As for the KONG toy do you put in tasty food inside of it? You can go on the KONG site and they all different receipes for the toys Just remember, no onions, grapes, raisins.
Try not to be frrustrated with him, I am sure he feels just as frustrated also. You can take a toy and you only play with it or with someone else. Have lots of fun with the toy, and then put it up. Do this for awhile, and maybe then he will become interested in what to do with it.
You can get into clicker and teach him to get interested in the toy also. If you do not know how to use a clicker, email me and I can give you tips.
How long have you had him? Don't dwell on bad behavior. Just think about how much improvement he has done. Write those down and you will see that he is improving little by little. You have alot of years to be together, lots of time.
