Could she be a good barrel horse? Pics included!!?
She's a 5 year old 14.2 hh very well built Mustang, one of the sweetest horses I've ever dealt with. She's not trained in any certain discipline, just pleasure/trails. Since she's so young she can still be trained well in a discipline, and I love barrel racing. I know they aren't very good conformation pictures, but do YOU think she could be a future barrel racer? Thanks in advance!

You won't know how good she is at it until you try.
Her build isn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. At the angles those pictures are at, it's impossible to tell how big her hip is; so there's really no reason for everyone to be saying she has a small hip. Her shoulder looked fine (in the first picture at least). She is lacking in muscle, but that's easy to fix.
If I were you, I'd forget about all the negative comments people left on here. They don't know you, they don't know your horse. All they did was look at a few bad pictures that were taken at bad angles. Those pictures don't do your horse justice, and I think you know that. If you want to barrel race with your horse, then go for it. Maybe she'll never be an NFR winner, but that doesn't mean she can't be good at it, and it definitely doesn't mean you and her can't have fun with it. Do what you want to do.

What is the right kind of bit?
Im not real familiar with what type of bit to use with what type of horse -as in what the horse does (barrel, trail, jumping, etc).
I have pleasure horses, so I was wondering what type of bit would be the best to use during a trail ride:

I have to examples of bits uptop. Can you tell me which one is the better one to use?
It depends on the horse and the rider. There is no one bit that works for all barrel horses, or all trail horses or all jumpers.
I usually suggest a snaffle. It's best for most horses. There is no leverage so the horse has a chance to do what is right before he gets hurt. Most horses are (or should be) started in a snaffle. They're also good choices for green riders, as yourself, as your horse feels exactly the same amount of poundage in his mouth as you do in your hands, so it's fairly easy to tell what you're doing to a horses' mouth when you do xyz with your hand. With a leverage bit, the slightest movement is amplified and you can turn a pinky flick into a big amount of movement and, sometimes, pain.
If you ride your horses for fun (you're not showing) a snaffle is fine. Western horses over the age of 5 should be shown in a curb bit (like the second one you linked to) because the powers-that-be feel a horse should be trained well enough to go in a leverage bit, and because western riders need to ride with one hand to have one free for other things.
The type of snaffle changes its action slightly. You have loose rings, dee rings, eggbutts, full cheeks, half cheek, fullmers, bauchers, etc.
The mouthpiece affects how it works too. You can have no break, one break, multiple breaks, different connectors, rollers, keys, etc.
Different materials have different affects, too. For example copper and sweet iron cause horses to salivate, which can make them relax their jaws and become more supple.
What you need to know is how your horse behaves under saddle, what things he or you need work on, how your hands are, how your seat and balance are, how his mouth is (in feel and in anatomy) and what you want to do with your horse.
My go-to bit for most instances is an eggbutt french link snaffle (like the first link), as it fits most horses' needs quite well. If a horse doesn't like that bit, I might fiddle with the ring or the mouthpiece to make it better for the horse. The two links make the bit less likely to jab a horse in the palate or pinch his tongue, but it does lay on the horses tongue more than a single break (which some horses don't like).
If you need a curb, go for one with short, curved shanks, a thick, soild mouth and a very slight port. Ride with it one handed, with slack in the rein. Be aware that your horse can feel you raise your hand or close your fingers- you don't need to engage the rein to get the message across.
Animal abuse is not 'heritage'; it's an affront and embarrassment to every decent human being past and present.
