Working Saddle Light
At what age do you personally start horses under saddle?

I would never start a horse that was under 2 - for any reason.

I like 3 or 4 better, but I think light riding at 2 (this means NO galloping, only very light cantering and for no longer than 30 minutes) with a light rider and with good care can work as long as they have proper calcium & phosphorus levels.

That's just my personal opinion - I wouldn't drag someone over coals for breaking in a 2 year old, provided it's not being ridden into the ground or anything. I prefer to wait til 3 or 4 though.

What age do you draw the line at?

No one EVER should start a horse under 2. I have started a few 2 year olds, yes I am guilty. Honestly if I could make a magical perfect world, all horses would be getting saddles when they are going on 5,once hock joints are finally done growing, the last and weakest joint to finish developing.

However I typically start horses under saddle around 3. I don't have an endless amount of 5 yr olds to train but its seems I get a lot of old and a lot of young ones.

I draw the line at 2. Not a day before they are two, not a "coming" two year old. TWO. I had a woman trying to sell me an 18 month old horse that had 15 rides on her trained for western pleasure. Her words were "she is still growing but it doesn't slow her down" my response was "Yeah, doesn't slow her down YET"

ADD- Rufus you are an IDIOT. You act like you know bits. You comment on my questions giving me advice when I told you ahead of time I had already tried it.
We all know race horses are being ridden at one.

No horse, let me repeat NO horse takes till 8 to grow. Some take till 6. I've studied it. The average stock horse breed, the average anyhorse breed has tons of different joints, all fusing and fully developed at different times. The back is find at age 3-4. The HOCKS are the weak joints. They DO NOT STOP GROWING till age 5. Also I ride a horse who is 2. The most brilliant effing horse I have ever ridden in my 10 years of riding and 3 years of riding congress horses. His mind is ready. He will only get better. Neither his owner or I have any wish to take him to futurities, it has nothing to do with the US or shows actually. Horses were being broke for cowboys at the age of 2 for a long time. Because people have ALWAYS thought of horses as disposable creatures, tools, and it is not something new that is developed by only our country. Your ignorant answers are ticking me off.

ADD_ thanks for more thumbs down ignoramus, as said below.... A horse won't take till 8 too mature I've studied, I've worked with vets, I am on my way to becoming a vet. The horse will mature at latest, the very end of its 6th year. All horses are done by then. I am not at all condoning breaking a two year old. But I've done it.

Is there any specific type of saddle you need for barreling?

like i have a saddle but is there anything that i need specially for barrel racing on my saddle it is pretty light and it fits my barrel horse so if any saddle works that would be great but if i need to get something added on to it or changed or just get a new one

so if anyone could help that would be great

oh and i WILL be choosing a best answer:)

thanks:)

They make barrel saddles specially made for barrel racing. They are light, have a high back, and a thin long horn for easy gripping around a turn. You don't NEED a barrel saddle to barrel race. I mean saddles are pretty expensive, so its not like people go changing saddles for every event. If your saddle is lightweight, and your comfortable racing in it, then why not? I raced in my trail saddle last night and to me it makes no difference. But just make sure that you are using all the right gear. The saddle is not the only important item! You at least need a breast collar and boots for your horse. I use a tie down too, but that's optional.
