English Saddle, Tree sizes Etc? can someone explain?
My Solid paint, Has higher withers,I was thinking that an English 17 medium tree Saddle would fit him, & me as well. The saddle i am using on him now is the owner of the barns, Its an all purpose saddle. I have ben using it For arena work and jumping. Whats the diffrence between tree sizes, and What would be good for my Gelding with high withers. thanks!
The only absolute in regard to saddle measurements is the seat size, and even that doesn't tell you 100% if the saddle will fit you. Seat depth, cantle height, knee rolls, stirrup bar placement, all affect the way a saddle fits a rider. The other size names are just suggestions, as far as knowing if it will fit a particular horse. Wide, narrow, medium, cutback, in western the name 'Quarter Horse bars' - none of them mean anything specific or standardized. Even when you see "6 inch gullet" it doesn't mean that any two 6 inch gullet saddles will fit the same way.
You just have to try them on the horse! It's helpful to know that your horse has tall withers or wide shoulders, but you can't know for sure if a saddle will fit until you've tried it on the horse.
Sorry to break the news to you, but it's true. I've made back molds when I had a hard-to-fit horse. I use plaster bandages that are sold in craft and hobby stores. If you have a friend in the medical field, maybe they can get you the material they use to make casts for broken bones. You'll also need a couple cans of that expanding spray foam insulation. Get everything ready on a not-too-windy day, or do it indoors. Lay an old sheet on the horse's back, then get a friend to help you dunk the wraps in water and unroll them on the horse's back. I think I used 5 rolls per horse, but get 7 or 8. Better to be ready with more, than to botch the whole job for lack of just one more roll. lay them out flat, back and forth, then side to side, at least 3 layers. Keep the horse still (maybe give him a good workout first, so he's happy to stand quietly) As soon as it's pretty well set up, take it off and very carefully place it on a saddle rack or something that will preserve the shape. When it's solid, spray layer by layer of insulation inside, to keep it rigid and in shape. Voila! you have a more portable version of your horse's back, which you can take to saddle shops to fit saddles before buying them.
It's a lot easier to check fit at the saddle shop or auction, than hauling a saddle home and worrying if it's going to get a ding or scratch, or if you're just stuck with it because there's no such thing as returns.

What is a spring tree saddle?
I need a new saddle and have been looking at a few that say they have a spring tree. What exactly is that and what are some pros and cons of having a saddle like that?
The term 'spring tree' is often stamped on saddles. This distinguishes that type from the older 'rigid tree'. The two terms are fairly self-explanatory. The rigid tree is a solid, stiff structure, while the spring tree is more slender in construction, utilising spring steel to allow some flexion. This has a bearing on the comfort of both horse and rider. In the early days there was considerable commercial gain from advertising the use of a spring tree, but nowadays this is almost universal.
