How religious are people? (sociological survey question)?
From the General Social Survey in 2004,
almost 60% of respondents reported praying at least once a day. Women were more likely than men to pray several times a day or once a day. Results for race were also striking, with 55% of Black respondents praying several times a day as compared to 27% of White respondents.
What social and cultural factors do you think account for the gender differences in reports of prayer frequency? What about the race difference?
Completely uneducated guess here:
Men feel less comfortable with not being 100% in control of their own fate than women.
Some minorities have religion seeded in their culture. For example, catholicism is very big in Mexico and parts of Latin America.
Environment also has a play. Poverty and hard times force people to rely on faith.

Christians: What do you think about people praying for everyday foolish things?
Let me be more specefic. I was watching the Amazing Race and there is a couple who literally prayed for EVERYTHING like to win each challenge and stuff like that. Then you seen people who will literally pray that they got good grades or win a free trip or just silly things like that. It seems kind of tacky and silly to me. When I pray i usually just say the lords prayer, give thanks for all that i have, and say "may your will be done"
Atheists: You don't have to try and show me how smart you are with smart ass answers. Just please leave it blank and don't waste my time and your own.
That is their prerogative. I pray to the Almighty God only and to no one else. I don't use repetitive and monotonous words either.
One must pray for the forgiveness of sins, for strength, courage and self improvement.
When you ask for material possessions, wealth, gifts and other silly petty things then it is wishful thinking not praying.
