how do you know what saddle size is right for your horse?
how do you measure what size of saddle is right for your horse?
Talk to your local saddle shop, some have tree's that they can loan out to take home. If your horse is thick (such as a stocky quarterhorse) it is probably a full tree, arabs half tree. In the long run this only gets you started, then follow the advice of the other answers. The sweat test works great, also just feel around, when the saddle is cinched up, can you run your hand in around the withers? If not, it is too tight. Most stores will let you take a saddle home and try it out for 24hours, if they don't , don't buy from there. Also, beware of cheap saddles that come off of a production line by the thousands, it is worth it to invest in a good saddle, even have a custom one made that will last years and years without hurting your horses back. How to get the right saddle size for your horse
How do i figure out what saddle size i need?
ok so i have always been riding in a western but i have switched to english and love it. i am now ready to buy an english sadde but i dont now what size to get. I have a 16.2hh tenessee walking horse and i need a saddle that would also fit him. help??
There are a couple of ways to find a correctly fitting saddle, or as close as possible to that. You can make a form (using a metal coat hanger or some other flexible wire) of his back, at the area where the bars of the saddle tree will rest - over the withers, and down the sides, just back of the shoulder blade. Take it when you go to look at saddles - make sure you allow an extra 4 inches above the top to allow enough room for the withers. This form will indicate the width tree you'll be aiming for. You can ask to take a saddle home and try it on your horse - they'll just want to make sure you keep it clean and might want a deposit. When you sit in the saddle, make sure there are a couple of inches clearance between the channel and your horse's withers. In addition to tree width, the saddle needs to be balanced front to back for your horse, and to be conformed well to the dip or lack of dip along the topline. Otherwise the saddle may either bridge or rock. Don't buy a saddle with a narrow channel ( ie< 4" wide), as it will interfere with his spine in doing lateral flexion through the topline - though that part of the spine is not particlarly flexible, it does have some lateral flexibility. The seat should be level when viewed from the side, so your weight is not tipped forward or back onto his lumbar area.
Ask for help from someone experienced in saddle fit. It's well worth the price to buy a good saddle that fits properly, and may help you avoid creating training problems related to pain from poor saddle fit, as well as avoiding rider position problems that could result from a badly balanced saddle.
Some horses are a lot easier to fit properly than others, and I've seen horses ridden in really bad-fitting saddles who tolerate it amazingly well - I just always wonder how much better they'd be performing if they were more comfortable. Some horses are extremely sensitive to pain from poor-fitting saddles. Maybe more info than you wanted. Good luck finding a good saddle - and one more point - you're much better off buying a used really good saddle (German, English, French) than a new cheap one. .
