Close contact English Saddle?
I have someone interested in buying my close contact english saddle however they asked what size the tree is. I have NO clue. How do I find out what size it is? They're looking for a wide tree or pony sized tree. How do I measure the tree?
The tree is measured between the tree points. You can feel the tree points under the flap near the front of the saddle, in front of the billets. The problem is they are under layers of leather, and it is hard to see both of them from the front at the same time! Saddle makers measure the distance before the saddle is built. So what I do is take a picture of the front of the saddle while I am holding a ruler in front of the tree points, and send it to the prospective buyer. Then they can read the ruler themselves and cannot say that I was wrong!
Another way is to contact the manufacturer and ask them. There are probably some numbers stamped on your saddle somewhere. They mean something. One of them might be a clue to the width for someone with the right knowledge, like the manufacturer.
