I have a sterling silver ring coated with 18K gold overlay and...?
I'm scared to use hand sanitizer on my hands while wearing it.
Is it safe? Will it destroy the coating or metal?
just take it off you know talking about your ring wasn't necessary

Amber Sterling Silver Modern Overlay Ring
what is the quality of the jewelery?
My brother and I are thinking about purchasing a mother's ring for our mom for Christmas. I've been looking at them, and want something pretty and not just the solid two stones sunk into a band look. I found one that I really like but it's a little pricy. Inorder to make it cheaper I can get 18K Gold Overlay (over sterling silver). I was wondering what kind of quality is this going to be? I don't want something that is going to tarnish or whatever a few years later!
Also if you know of a decent priced store with good quality work please let me know. Thus far I like Zales.com
18K is very soft gold and will wear down fast. Also, if it is overlay, it will wear OFF of the silver and you will see spots of silver showing through. I think you should look for reasonably priced 10K or 14K gold, and you don't necessarily need real stones with that. The price will come down if you get synthetic stones, which can be just as pretty and last just as long. You should probably budget $125 - $200 for real gold and a synthetic stone. Much more for real gold and real stones. Zales would be good - they can explain the whole karat thing and overlay to you and show you what that means. I would look at other jewelry store chains and I would also check out locally owned jewelers because sometimes they will negotiate with you.
