"Hooray For Our Side" quote origin - Lady Godiva?
I have heard the joke several times that it comes from her famous side saddle ride, but I'm sure that's not the true origin. Any ideas?
Lady Godiva was from the eleventh century. The sidesaddle was not developed till the sixteenth century (supposedly for Elizabeth the First, who loved to hunt). Godiva very likely sat sideways on the horse, in a sort of chair-saddle that made it hideously hard to stay mounted and wracked the innards pretty hard. It is unthinkable that she rode the horse astride.
Just some historical information, because history is so neato.
By the way, if your friends think little snickery jokes about a nude woman and whether or not she was facing "our" side of the street or "their" side are funny knee-slappers, then get some better friends. Besides, the legend said that she covered herself with her hair and all the people closed their shutters in respect. Only one guy named Tom looked, and earned the name "peeping tom" which is where we get that name.
So your friends are not only childish and immature, but ignorant. Join a book club or something.
As for answering your question, the term "side" ("One of two or more contesting teams, groups, parties, etc.: Our side won the baseball game") goes back to Old English. I don't think you can pinpoint the first time someone said "hooray" in conjunction with the word "side".
