Horse Shows and tack boxes?
I am starting 4-H this year. I was just wondering how important is it for me to have a tack box? i know i've heard of a lot of people saying "get a tack box" but they are really expensive and i'm just wondering if i really need one. i do have a lot of show stuff, but i also have a show bag. if i zip up the bag, and maybe find a lock for the zippers, do i really need a tack box? also, if i do need a tack box, do you know where i can find cheap ones, or how to make one that will work? i do have a big plastic box, and could just put hinges and locks on that, but is clear. will it still work?

You don't have to have a tack box. Just put your saddle and pad and the expensive things in your truck or trailer when your not using it, and lock the doors. If you put it in the trailer, make sure you have a hitch lock. You can always have someone make you a tack box, if you really want one. It should be cheaper than buying one. If someone really wanted to steal your things, all they could do is cut open the bag and get your things.

I think the clear box would be ok, but you would want to put something inside it where it blocks the view so people can't tell what you have in there. I have one like this: http://www.organizeit.com/pobigbox.asp

Getting Ready to Show Your Horse
Locking your stall at a horse show?
We will be staying at a show for a few days. We have an extra tack stall that we will be storing everything in. What is the easiest way to lock stalls at shows? A bike lock? Since everything will be there over night and we won't be, I just want to make sure everything is secure since so many people will be coming and going.
I use a chain and a padlock. I usually take my saddles to the motel room with me, since that is what thieves target first. One other thing I have found to be helpful. Do not hang anything in the front wall of the tack stall that is of any value. It is real easy to reach thru and pull halter and bridle bags thru the bars. This is where my hoses, hay and feed go. I also cover everything at night with a tarp (the lightweight blue ones). So if they want anything, they are going to have to dig for it. Which most won't do. One other thing that we learned the hard way. Do not leave your horses papers and such in the stall after you have entered. Take them back and lock them in the truck. My trainer had her briefcase stolen out of a stall in broad daylight. In addition to the loss of the papers, they also got her home address (from the coggins papers) and a spare set of keys, and then went to her house and broke in there. Cleaned her barn completely out.
