Vintage Selmer Soloist Short Shank G (Tenney reface)

My friend switched her horse to a mechanical hackamore who has always used a tie down. Can she still use one?

This horse is fairly well trained, but he still has issues to deal with after being badly abused. He is about 10 and seems very relaxed and responsive in the hackamore. In the past he has always had a tie down and a short shank curb bit used on him since he tends to travel a bit high headed. My friend is used to riding horses that travel with their heads slung lower. Can she still use a tie down with this horse or will it interfere with the action of the mechanical hackamore?

My parents have used tie downs and hackamores together for the last 10-15 years without any trouble. Tie downs should really be used for a horse that tosses it's head, has a tendancy to rear, or if it thinks it is a camel (like mine). There are things to do to teach the horse to carry its head lower (I did and so I rarely use a tie down anymore unless I am going to a strange place with LOTS of strange horses), but a tie down can be a real blessing until the horse is taught proper head carriage. I've just gotten used to my horses head being slightly higher than everyone elses, because I still have control of her and she isn't hurting me or her.
