Saddle Parelli
Ex-racehorse on Parelli, advice?

My friends have a 6 y/o thoroughbred who is- as I mentioned- an ex-racehorse. She is pregnant. My friend got her from an elderly lady who couldn't take care of her horses anymore and Miti(the horse) was always treated very well. My friend wants a good riding horse for her and she wants to be able to let her kids ride some too. The only thing Miti wants to do when she has the saddle on is run, with or without a rider. I'm going to start her on the Parelli program next week. Do you think Parelli will help her with both ground manners and respecting the rider under saddle? The owners are seriously considering selling her because they think she is going to hurt someone. Can you give me ANY advice? I'm desperate to make her a suitable horse, I know she's not mine but I couldn't stand her going away. I have a bad feeling that she'd end up with a harsh trainer. She can't have her spirit taken away. It seems like that's all she has.

The barn that I ride at is completly based on Parelli. We have used it to train many horses, and three ex-racehorses. These types of horses are always thinking "GO GO GO!" no matter what they are doing, because they were trained to race. It can take a while to help a horse calm down. As far as ground work goes, start by teaching her a few of the games. Always start with the friendly game so she can get used to the feel of the stick and the rope all over her body. Once she is comfortable with it, this means not jumpy and still, you can start teaching her that the carrot stick can be used for pressure too. When she knows most of the games, and responds well to them, then you can start using this. Note that this process can take a while, and it is not worth doing quickly.

This one particular technique, we used on this ex-racehorse Dondi. She is doing much better now. You basically need yourself, a roundpen, your horse, and your carrot stick. You are trying to teach her to calm down. So first, keep her moving along the roundpen. Let her choose the gait, and don't be too picky. After a few minutes, step in front of her driveline (her shoulder). She should turn around and go the other direction. If not, swing the carrot stick a few feet in front of her path. She most likely will turn with her butt to you, so she swings her hindquarters around with her head in the fence. Keep changing directions by stepping in front of her drive line until she stops and checks in with you. She will slow down and turn her head towards you and prick her ears up. When she does, immediatly relax your body and turn the other way. Wait until she comes to you. Then do friendly game for a few minutes. Then go in the other direction until she checks in with you moving both ways. Some horses have trouble doing it going in one direction, particularly race horses because they are so used to only moving one way.

parelli saddle question?

I have been doing parelli for almost a year and It has done wonders for my horse. I love the fluidity saddle, but I can't afford to spend that kind of extra money right now b/c I am a teenager. I have thought about buying a wintec dressage saddle because you can change the gullet and they have that CAIR system that kind of sounds like what the theraflex pads do. Does anyone know if wintec dressage saddles work well compared to a fluidity saddle? I know it won't be the same, but I am trying to find the best inexpensive alternative.(It has to be a dressage saddle).
thanks!!!

I've owned BOTH kinds and the leather ones are still with me. In the early 90's I traded a set of corner plates for a Wintec Sport and grant it, it was a GREAT saddle, BUT the difference in sitting in one vs my now 40 year old Stubben Siegfried is like the difference between owning a Saturn and trying to compare it to a Mercedes. Let's see if the Wintec holds up to the standards of a Stubben nearly 40 years later.

Our reasoning behind this is that a synthetic, no matter how they make 'em has no "GIVE", that's one of the reasons for the interchangable gullets in the saddles of the Wintecs. I can honestly say in the decades of owning my Siegfried (Stubben), I've NEVER had it on a horse it didn't fit and I've owned a LOT of different sized/breeds of horses. From WIDE Quarter Horses to Narrow TBs and even a couple of Arabs.

I don't like the fact that the synthetics don't have any "give" to them and you stand a better chance of soring up a horse because they don't shift with a horse's body (They have little or no "give" in the trees, let alone the comfort that a leather saddle does for it's rider if you get a good, quality saddle.).

If you're limited on funds, then try e-bay and find a good used saddle.
