Guitar Question: My strings keep slipping out of the saddle on my Floyd Rose when I tune?
This is my first time changing the strings on this 80's model Charvell with a Floyd Rose in it. Every time I try to tune it up, the strings either unwind or they slip out. Any advice will be appreciated, thanks
If you have the kind of bridge that does not use ball-end strings, then make sure you push the end of the string all the way into the hole in the bridge and tighten the allen setscrew that holds it in place before you bring the string up to pitch. If you have the kind of bridge that uses ball-end strings (like a Kahler, maybe some Floyds do this too) make sure the ball end of the string is seated well in the bridge before you tune up.
BTW, the "saddle" is on the tremolo bridge (where the whammy bar is). If you mean that the string is slipping at the tuning machine (the part at the headstock where the string winds around a post that turns when you turn a knob on the headstock), try allowing more slack in the string so that more of it winds around the post before the string is at pitch. Your high E and your B string (the thinnest ones with no windings) should go around the post at least 5 times (but not much more than that) when the string is tuned to pitch. The thicker strings (the ones with windings on them) need only go around the post about 3 times (in particular, there isn't room for much more than that on the low E string)
Theres a way to insert the string into the tuning machine such that when the string wraps around the post it holds down the end of the string that goes through the other side of the post. it absollutely eliminates slippage at the tuning machine.Its hard to describe. Maybe I can post a pic for you.
