The saddle I ride in has really bad girth leathers which makes it really hard to tighten the girth?
My trainer is really strict and the girth has to be incredibly tight. The problem is that I dont own the saddle I ride in and because its pretty old the leathers are getting stretched out and make it really hard to tighten the girth. I dont want to buy my own saddle now because I dont always ride the same horse, but I always use the same borrowed saddle. What should I do to make it easier to put the girth on? (all the horses at the barn are pretty girthy because theyre also used for therapeutic riding and sometimes they get pulled on, which doesnt help)
If the billets are the problem then you should try to clean them. Clean them with saddle soap and then oil them with pure neatsfoot oil. I would oil them twice because it sounds like they aren't well kept.
The real problem may be that the girth is either too big or too small for the horse. You want it to be about 1/2 way up the billets when it is properly tightened. If it won't go past the first hole then it's far too small. If it's on the 2nd to the top or very top, then it's too big. If you use an entirely leather girth without any elastic, make sure that it's not too tight because your horse won't be able to breathe as well. I recommend asking your trainer to let you use a girth that has elastic on both ends. These are very easy to tighten and you don't have to worry about it being to tight. If your mount snaps at you when you tighten it, slap him on the shoulder.

SADDLE PADS AND GIRTH!?
can i clean my teal and yellow saddle pads?! and also my fleece white saddle pad? i also have a fleece girth thats very dirty. can i clean that as well?
You can wash them on the gentle cycle in your washer. When I wash the girth, I always place it in a pillow case and use a rubber band or nylon hair twist in order to secure it and to keep it closed. I would recommend air drying these items to avoid them from shrinking. Make sure that you brush or shake the dirt and horse hair off before placing the items in the washing machine. This helps to keep horse hair from sticking to the inside of the washer and makes cleaning the basin less time consuming. I just use regular laundry detergent, and a bit of bleach for white pads.
