What are some extremely beginner excercises for an unbalanced horse?
I've been working with a horse (Velvet) for a neighbor, just to exercise her since the owner can't for a while. Well I am not a horse trainer, but I know her canter is horrible! I was so shocked the first time I cantered on her because shes wonderful at the walk and trot. She turns into a train wreck at the canter. For a few strides, she feels fine IF we are going straight but Velvet will cut corners and if I try to keep her straight UNTIL the turn, she'll just drop to a trot. It's frustrating and I'm trying to make sure I don't lean or shift my weight and stay balanced in the saddle to encourage her to turn in the corner. I mean she canters when I lunge her, so its probably part me, but even then she'll just canter for a full circle and then quit and trot really fast. She's not ready for figure eights yet! She can't even handle small circles. So are there any simple things I can do with her to build her up a little? Any help will be appreciated thank you!
If it is a very young or very inexperienced horse, it may take a month or so for him to learn how to balance with a rider. The canter will eventually smooth out, but give him enough time and do exercises that encourage balance and shoulder/topline/hindquarter development. To help him balance, I wouldn't try smaller circles until he can canter consistently on a very large circle.
When you pick up the canter, keep doing what your doing by staying balanced in the canter, but don't forget to keep squeezing with your legs, especially going into the corners, this will encourage him to stay in the canter, even if it is unbalanced.
Also, make sure he doesn't have too much weight on the front end because this would prevent his canter from smoothing out. Encourage him by picking his head up with your reins and squeezing with your legs at the same time. This should encourage him to lift up his front end and allow for a smoother and more balanced canter.
If you have a hill nearby, you can walk and trot up and down the hill to build muscle, confidence, and balance (This is a great exercise)
Don't be discouraged, training takes time and patience, as i'm sure you know. You sound like a capable rider and I hope the best for both of you.

Cleaning out the tack room?
So, a friend and I have been cleaning out the yards tack room. It's been truly let go and is a huge mess; piles of leather straps, dirt, webs, dust bunnies, boots and brushes (I've only moved here recently)
We've cleaned out half already but there's one thing I'm not coping with. Let me introduce you to my new friends:

I was considering taking my bug spray but I don't want to piss them off. I guess attacking them with the broom doesn't help either..
What does everyone else do to get rid of spiders out of corners and saddles? Would a bug bomb ruin leather?
The black and red one is a black widow. She probably has eggs. Smash and vacuum.
A shop vac with long sleeves and gloves is super. Besides black widows, we also have brown recluses and those guys are very nasty bites. The other photos you posted were not good enough to tell if you have recluses. They have a fiddle image on their back which is very clear.
Vacuuming with a shop vac with a replaceable bag is pretty safe. Once you have them sucked up, you stuff the end with a rag and they die in there very quickly so you can throw the whole thing away.
If you have black widows in the tack room, you have them elsewhere. I have found them building webs under the gaps in mineral block holders in the pastures and trying to take up residence next to the house between flowerpots. I am not fond of them, but recluses are worse and leave awful wounds that are slow to heal when they bite. Go online and see which spiders live in your area.
