Why Are Certain Sports Franchises More Successful Than Others .....?
Let me explain this a bit more. The NBA has a history of Great franchises who though they don't win the title every other year have won the vast majority of titles and have very high winning percentages over the majority of other teams.
The Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers are the two premier teams that have dominated the NBA in both total wins and titles.
I'm not forgetting any other teams ... Houston and San Antonio are recent contenders for the titles they won ... they aren't included because over the course of their NBA history they weren't always dominant or even contenders consistently.
What makes the Lakers or Celtics better than the other teams? Smarter coaches? Better General Managers? I know they have a history of getting the better players but why can't the other teams follow the same formula ..... whatever it is?
Thanks and thumbs up to all who answer! Just give me time to get back and read the answers.
Great answers! Thanks!
Great drafts, trades, and FA signings, though every team has had their share of busts.
The Celtics took Len Bias at #2 in 1986, but he died the next day. This combined with the death of Reggie Lewis, the demise of Bird, McHale, and Parish, and some terrible drafts and trades (Acie Earl, Rick Fox, trading away Billups for Kenny Anderson) led to the Celtics fall from grace for nearly 20 years. Until 2002-2003, when Paul Pierce led the Celtics to within 1 game of the Finals, renewing faith in the Celtics and bringing hope for a bright future. Then Danny Ainge was hired, and decided enough was enough, trading West, Szcerbiak, and Green for Allen, then Al Jeff and the farm for KG. He traded for Rondo and Perkins on their respective draft days, and the new Celtics were formed.
Its all about getting that 1 player, that makes the fans believe, and wills his team to victory. For the Lakers this guy is Kobe, for the Celtics its Pierce, for the Rockets it was Olajuwon, for the Knicks it was Ewing, Cavs Lebron, Bulls MJ, Spurs Duncan, the list goes on and on.
Any GM can destroy a team, like ML Carr and Rick Pitino destroyed the Celtics, Isaiah Thomas destroyed the Knicks, and Joe Dumars is currently destroying the Pistons as we speak. Its finding a rare special player that makes the players and fans believe, that takes a team to the next level.
The Celtics and Lakers won, because throughout the ages they both constantly found these players, while other teams failed to do so. That is really simplifying it, but that is how it goes.
Celtics 50s and 60s: Bill Russell
Celtics 60s and 70s: John Havlicek
Celtics 80s: Larry Bird
Celtics 00s: Paul Pierce
Lakers 40s and 50s: George Mikan
Lakers 60s and 70s: Jerry West
Lakers 80s: Magic Johnson
Lakers 00s: Kobe Bryant
(Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt are both those kinds of players, but they both split their careers, same with Shaq)
It is these stars, who will their team to victory, that cause Dynasties. It is not just about talent, it is about heart, and how they make the players around them better. Players like Iverson and McGrady had the talent, but were never able to make the guys around them great, lead their team, which is why they never won.
