Hey there, I got your email, I'm getting ready for a sale right now, but after this weekend I will look up some reputable ppl out your way.
Depends on the back of the mule, I have one mule in horse bars and my others in mule bars.
A mule saddle WILL NOT fit just because its a 'mule saddle'.
Mules are tough to fit, no doubts on that one. Gaited mules have more 'shoulder action' so their shoulder blade comes back farther. A shorter bar'ed saddle such as gaited saddles are recommended. Although I have a QH mule that has a never ending shoulder blade, so go figure lol.
But http://www.timberridgesaddlery.com They do make gaited mule saddles, they at least try to fit to the mule and offer money back and they are legit. I have never heard of these ppl screwing anyone, only good references.
I promise I will get back to you after the sale this weekend in Colorado, but definately scroll through their website, their prices aren't bad at all.
EDIT- also the bars on the saddle go further back then you would put on a horse's back.. The gullet actually sits behind the shoulders in the hollow area or even further back depending on the shoulder. Compared to a horse, you really think you have put it too far back, this is one of the reasons I don't work with horses anymore, I can never put the saddle proper on them. Also a crupper is really needed for mules. Most mules are trained to crupper or britching already, but the saddles will slide forward on them and you need to keep it off their shoulders. They are just naturally built like this, no amount of padding or proper saddle fitting will fix this. Even in the show ring, I use a crupper, I can't tell you how many 8 sec or less rides I have had at the expense of not having one of these on, all going downhill. I personally use a crupper for easibility, but its all personal choice
