Monroe Veach 16" Western Saddle $250.00 |
Value of Monroe Veach saddle?
I have a saddle that was made by Monroe Veach, serial number 11809. It is in pretty decent shape and I was wondering how much it is worth?? I was told by Veach that the replacement value is $2500. It has amazing tooling and has "University of Missouri 1973 All Around Horse" on the fenders. I am thinking about sending it to Veach for cleaning and to get new fleece, and am wondering what it will be worth once it is all cleaned up and in really good condition?
Thanks!!
The "replacement value" is what it would cost for them to reproduce that exact saddle. It isn't necessarily what the saddle would bring if you were to sell it.
By far the most collectible Monroe Veach saddles are the Fred Lowry ropers as it was very popular saddle throughout the 40's, 50's and even into the 60's. One of those in good original condition can command a pretty high price. Also popular with collectors are their trick riding saddles, another style they were/are well-known for.
Since it sounds like your saddle was made in the early 70's it's doubtful it was by Monroe Veach himself as he would have been quite old (70's I believe?). It was likely made by one of his children or grandchildren.
Your saddle is a trophy saddle and they have a limited number of collectors. Even still it's probably worth some money especially if you send it off to Veach to have it properly cleaned and restored.
Your saddle really isn't that old in terms of vintage/antique saddles. The best sellers in that category are by far the Hopes, Wades, Old-Timers and A forks.
If you were to put it up for sale (after restoration) a reasonable price would probably be in the $1,000-$1,300 range, possibly a little lower because it is a trophy saddle. The right person might pay more but you'd have to advertise it properly to get it noticed.
