Damn it now I want to see great fiction of history written in sci fi style. We begin with **Uncle Tom’s Cabin** by Harriet Beecher Stowe. > Simon Legree stepped out of the house wearing his wide-brimmed cloth hat and looked with dismissiveness at the black-skinned men on his plantation where various crops such as potatoes and cotton were grown. Each one darker than the last, and for that, earned the harder brunt of his fury. They wore tattered rags only slightly less costly than Legree’s own clothing. And that Legree had not the means to make himself greater above these Negroes made him hate them all the more. He could see the fear in their eyes. All but one. The darkest one, Tom, stared at him only with a kind of pity. But why should a Negro pity a white man? It was the God that these Negroes clung to so dearly — that’s why Tom pitied Legree! Tom knew that Legree had long lost his faith in God. Perhaps, as he refused to admit to himself, because he lived in a world where a man could enslave his fellow man, and how could God allow such a world to exist? But no, these were not men! Not men at all! Just because they believed in God did not make them men! Naturally, belief in a single God was shared among men of black and white skin alike. But the Negroes had a special child-like wonder in their worship, which made them worthy of ridicule to the white Christians. Each time Tom looked at Legree with those eyes he pulled his leather bullwhip up and brought it smack across Tom’s broad, long-burdened back. When Tom fell upon the soil, Legree brought his shadow over him, and as Tom looked up, Legree’s yellow teeth smiled at him as he cackled: “Back to work, man-animal!”
