How much weight can a pony carry?
Okay, here it is. I recently acquired a fabulous welsh pony that is about 13 hands, for my daughters (9 and 6). I intend on getting my daughters lessons. Now, the pony is a little energetic and has not been worked with for quite awhile. My daughters aren't capable of working with him in the saddle properly. I was wondering if my weight would be too much on him. I'm 5'5'' and 120 pounds. Sure, I'm gonna feel like a big doofus riding this little pony, but I would like to work with him so that my daughters can enjoy him. Basically, aside from longeing him, I would like to teach him that it's okay to just walk. He is such a good boy (especially with kids), but he does seem like he wants to take off. Tell me what you all think.
The general rule of thumb is that a horse can carry 20% of its own weight including the saddle.
An average weight of a 13hh pony is around 300 kg. That would mean 20% of that is 60 kilos. You weigh 54.55 kg and along with his saddle, I think you will be fine.

Where can I get a summer job at a day camp working with kids and horses?
I'm fourteen and I have a lot of experience with horses. Most people aren't interested in hiring me because I am so young and they think I don't have enough experience. I have been in the saddle since I was 5 and am very involved and highly ranked in pony club. It needs to be somewhere in the bay area in California. I am not interested in working for free and I already babysit. I'm really good with kids and have trained many horses. I just want to work this summer. Any suggestions on where?
I have been a camp counselor and am still involved with this camp, and have had experience at several camps. They all have a minimum age requirement to work there, and you're simply not old enough yet. It has nothing to do with experience yet. Much of it is regulated by the camp's policy or by laws on how old people must be to work with kids, etc.
Once you turn 15 or 16, you can find a camp with a CIT or LIT program (which stands for Counselor or Leader In Training). You would spend several weeks (or all summer, depending on how the camp is set up) working with the horses/kids while getting training and guidance from the counselors. How it works at the camps I've been to is that you don't get paid for the work, but you stay and eat for free. It sets you up to be hired once you ARE old enough.
You can try to find a camp that will allow you to volunteer working in their barn as an alternative for now, too. My camp does take volunteer applications

If you'r used to the euro-english fit, western saddles will look and feel odd. Fitting is a matter of Shoulder to croup,and they are made to accomodate just about anything.Pad to fit.
Girth: not too close to the arm ( stretch the leg to remove little wrinkles that wll gall)
Length: Squarebacked is traditional for normal horses,with the round skirt for arabians and ponys.
Size: if your used to a 17 in english, that is a 16 in stock/western lingo.
Secondhand is great, its had a bit of softening up. Try setting your stirrups with a broom handle thru them at a 3/4 turn to save your knees later.( turning the stirrups)
Latigos: long leather strings you can tie all kinds of stuff to,like your saddle bags and water bottle,snacks and maps. I put the maps in a large clear ziplock bag and roll them.
Saddlebags: A few styles to choose from, everything from pack it in/out to refrigerated 6-packs on the go.
The largest thing to get used to is the weight: average western saddle is 22-26 pounds, your english was 6-8 pounds. A good gel or fleece pad will help. I put a clean baby crib sized sheet under the pad, work horse a bit, then look and see where the pressure points or sweaty patches are. These are potential pain places and you can adjust pads accordingly.
*Glad you asked here in Horses:sport/racing rather then the horses: "pets" area. Who wants advice from a goldfish and puppy expert? Horses are a sport.
