Josey Barrel

Josey Barrel

Josey Barrel
Bit for a barrel horse?

My barrel horse is a really hard runner, and I'm starting him on poles and want a bit with a little more rate and/or control.
He can be ridden in a snaffle, but is always run in a Martha Josey competition bit.
I'm no bit expert, and don't really know if any of these bits would be right for my horse.
I don't mind running him in a harsher bit because I know I'm soft with my hands, and whenever we aren't running a pattern full out we are riding in a snaffle bit.
So please just give me your opinion on these bits!
Thanks in advance.

those are really harsh bits.

Probably the least harsh out of all of them is the last one.

I love nosebands on bits, use them for training on the greenies, but never a metal one.

I hate short shanks, I would rather see you on the 3rd one with no shanks than the nutcracker effect of the other 2.

A Visit With Martha Josey

Help me pick a bit for my horse?

My mare is 6 yrs old, and I was wondering what would be the best first shank bit for her.

She is a barrel horse, and currently I ride her in Martha Josey's O-Ring combination bit(it has a mullen mouthpiece), and she responds really well to it, because she is a light-mouthed horse. I want to start showing my mare in reining classes through 4-H, and I am required to use a bit with shanks. What is a gentle bit that has shanks?, because I have never rode her with a shanked bit. Should I get a solid or broken mouthpiece?

solid mouthpieces are better in my opinion, but use whatever u trained ur horse with because that will be best
