How do I get started in leatherwork?
I am interested in making things with leather... Doesn't matter what, but I want to make it with my own hands out of leather. This can include cups, vests, armor, hats, etc. etc. I am in the SCA, if that helps narrow down what kind of leatherworking I'm talking about.
What would I need to get started? What kind of tools? Where can I get large amounts of different weighted leather for cheap? (I want to cut, sew, stamp, press, boil, etc. etc. all kinds of leather...)
Well, I would start off by seeing if there was a Tandy Leather store near you. (www.tandyleatherfactory.com) You can pick up your basics there.
Secondly, id try to get in contact with a local leather guild (http://www.ifolg.org/members.htm)
Other on line resources are:
www.leatherworker.net
www.iilg.org

iilg-leather
You might also check with your local SCA group.

What is the best way to display leather pieces?
I purchased two hand tooled leather pieces in Mexico, and would like to hang them up on the wall. Is there a certain way I should frame them or something, so I don't damage them?
Depending on how big they are, you can put them in "shadow boxes". These are like a picture frame w/glass on the front, but deep, so accomodate 3-d items. This will keep them safe and dust free. You can buy them at craft stores. If they are larger, ask the framing desk about larger "boxes".
