I'm getting a yorkie-poo...?

i have read up on both breeds (yorkshire terrier and poodle) and have seen older dogs from the same family so i know what to expect... among those things are possible trouble housebreaking and chewing so if anyone has any tips to help me out when i'm training her that would be great.

also, i know that a yorkie-poo is a "mutt" and no i can't find the same thing at an animal shelter. im so tired of fanatics trying to preach - im biracial so any comment you make about mutts, halfbreeds, etc. will be ill received.
question is in last sentence of the first paragraph: tips for chewing and housebreaking

Congratulations on your new dog! I just got my new chihuahua recently and it is so much fun to have a puppy again. Also, sorry that some people are so fanatical and pushy about the "adopt a dog" thing. I bought my dog from a breeder bc I wanted to meet both the parents (and aunts, uncles, siblings, etc) and I wanted a dog that came from healthy parents with the sort of calm chihuahua temperament I prefer. Yes, there are chihuahua in animal shelters everywhere, but they are the leftovers that someone else has already rejected. I looked a few times, but couldn't find any that weren't nervous, yappy and older. I want to do this right so that I have a nice dog for the next 15-20 years, not a mess that I have to try to fix. Sorry if that's selfish, but it's not my fault that the world is full of people who do not breed and train their dogs properly. And it's not yours either, so congrats on doing your research and finding a breeder and getting to know your pup's family. I am sure this will increase your chances of ending up with a great little friend!

So, some advice: I do think it's hard to housebreak these little guys, mine was sneaking under the bed to pee and I thought he was just looking for toys! You really have to watch them. I was having some trouble, so I did a little searching and finally got the answers I needed on this site:

http://thehousebreakingbible.com/training/housebreaking-basics.htm

I am doing the "puppy airlift" technique part of the time and the "umbilical cord training" the rest of the time he is out. That has reduced his accidents to almost zero! Yippee!

When he is not out with me, he is in his exercise pen with a litter box. Are you going to do indoor potty training or teach him to go outside? I have to say I am loving the indoor thing, although it can be a bit stinky at times. Read "Choosing a Housebreaking Plan" (on that same site) if you are still on the fence.

About the chewing, I got my puppy lots of chew toys and I'm keeping everything off the floor for now. I did have to scold him once for chewing on the button on my sweater, but otherwise no problems. Maybe chihuahua's aren't such big chewers? Anyway, good luck with the little thing. And have fun!
