Fino gaited Smooth gaiting horse? Please help! Thanks!! 10 points!?
Ok. So I ride PUerto Rican Paso Finos. All of the horses at the farm have the gait. (smooth forte) The very first time I rode, it was as smooth as can be. It seems pretty smooth when I don't have reins in my hands. but every other time, I am bouncing in the saddle. How can I fix this?
O, and sometimes I will go smooth but a few seconds later, I am back to bumping around
THANKS!
Is this more on you or the horse? I don't understand what you are asking. Does the horse lose his smoothness when you have the reins or do you have trouble staying deep in the saddle when you are maintaining contact?
I would suggest working with your hands in the position as if you are holding the reins but don't actually hold them. Once you get past this, try holding the reins in your hands but have them so loose that you don't have any contact on the reins. Then try light contact. Finally try full contact.
You could also try different things such as dropping your stirrups. I rid hunters and I find that in the sitting trot I am much more firm in the saddle without stirrups because it allows me to sink much more deeply into the saddle. Another variation on this is riding bareback. When you can truly feel every muscle in the horse's gait, it allows you to better learn to how to adjust your body to it.
The final aspect is mental. When you feel yourself bouncing around, most people try to compensate by gripping with their legs. This mindset will only make you bounce more. Instead, think about...Thanksgiving dinner. Imagine yourself as a very heavy weight sinking into the horse's back. Gripping with your legs directs the horse's motion directly up to your torso. Think about relaxing the grip with your legs so that your torso can sink firmly down to the ground. Sitting a gait is about your core, not your legs.
Play around with these ideas. They won't all work for you, but trying one exercise could make you think of a new one that may make a difference. Make sure you keep your shoulders tall. You could imagine you are a fat king: sit upright and royally but sit heavy in the saddle. Good luck!

horses in puerto rico?
There called paso fino and do they useally trained to ride english or western,do they use spainish saddles in pr,are they a smooth riding horse with a easy gait
Most are ridden in western style, gaited horse saddles.
Their gaits are different than others horses, i cant really explain it. It is a deeper, bouncey gait. They also have an extra gait, forgot what it is called.
They are a smoother ride for some, many people with arthritis and back problems ride them.
They can have problems with their backs as the "hollow out" their backs, but not always.
They have a different build so they usually need specific tack. They can be ridden English, but i have seen them used for side saddle more often.
They are much like any other horse, just a different build and gait.
