cook Brown

can i cook brown rice using just boiling water from a kettle?
I eat brown rice regularly (it is the majority of what i eat on a dairly basis) and last month I moved to a university residence where stove tops are not available. All I own is an electric stainless steel water kettle (and there's a microwave, but I don't like using it..)
what are the guidelines to cooking brown rice using only the appliances I have? Best answers are those that avoid using microwave
Hey Zaf, It's been a long time since hearing from you. Hope you are well and happy. I'd say you can use the kettle to cook your rice, but you have to be sure you clean it out after each use.
The trick for rice is always 1 cup of rice and two cups of liquid, but for brown rice, it's a little more. I use 2-1/2 cups water for each cup of rice. Okay, so say you want to make a 1/2 cup of brown rice. Use 1-1/4 cups of water. Bring water to a boil in the kettle and add your rice. Bring it back to a boil and then turn off the kettle and cover the steam outlet with foil and let it sit for 35 minutes without touching it. When time is up, empty the rice onto a plate and then completely rinse out the kettle and wash it inside and out with hot soapy water. Make sure all the grains come out of the kettle. If it is a kettle you can wash easily, then I'd say you can also cook your rice with a package of chicken or beef soup mix. That will give the rice more flavour if you want that. You can cook a lot of other things in that kettle too, if you keep your diet to canned soup or stew products. The brown rice is very healthy. You can add frozen vegetables to your kettle also and make rice pilaf. Just get some frozen spinach or any frozen vegetable and put a 1/4 cup into the kettle when you start it so that the water will boil and cook everything through. Buy a bottle of Mrs Dash seasoning and put some of that into the water when you add the rice. That will give it a whole new flavour too. I just was thinking about giving you some variety so you don't laways have plain rice. It's up to you. All the best to you my friend. Take care and be well.
