Barrel saddles!? Recommendations anyone?
Well, I do really want to try barrel racing and my sister likes it, so I'm starting to look at some saddles. I don't care how much it costs b/c if its REALLY expensive, I'll just try and find it used. And if I don't love barrels I'll give it to my sister. So, I've ridden in a couple barrel saddles and here's what I MUST have:
-Suede seat (preferably roughout fenders too)
-Deep seat w/ high cantle and pommel
-3"-4" horn, bigger the better
-overall really secure and kind of holds you there
So, any recommendations? So far the double j's and circle y martha josey's look good to me.
Specific models welcome! Oh, and I need a 16" seat.
Well, yeah, it depends on the person, but I do not have tack stores anywhere near me and don't really know anyone that barrel races all that well, to borrow their saddle. But since I listed all the stuff I want, I was thinking somebody could point me in a general direction so I don't have to spend $$$$$$$$$$$ shipping and trialing saddles.
Every big name brand designs their saddles a little differently. They all work just as well as the others, but it's still a matter of personal preference.
It's kind of like jeans. There are a million awesome brands for jeans, but everyone feel most comfortable in a different one. You just have to try on a bunch of pants until you find the brand that fits you best.
It's exactly the same as with saddles. No one can tell you which brand is best because there is no best brand. You just have to go to a tack store (or borrow other people's saddles) and see what brand you feel most comfortable and secure in.
Most of the big name brands make quality saddles, and if you find a brand that you've never really heard of, just ask the company for references (or post the brand on here, someone has probably had experience with it).
I've tried some really super nice/expensive english saddles that felt horrible for me. Then I found a super cheap (literally as cheap as it gets) saddle that everyone says is crap. I love my crappy saddle! It's beyond comfortable for me, fits my horse like a dream, and has held up GREAT for being a $150 saddle. It hasn't malfunctioned once! Everyone seems to think that expensive=quality, and it's just not true. Crap is crap, regardless of price. And quality is quality, regardless of price. So don't let a big price make you think you're automatically getting a good saddle, and don't let a small price make you think you're automatically getting a bad saddle.
With all that said, I really like Circle Y's. Also, American Saddlery makes AWESOME saddles. They're cheaper because the company is smaller, but they are great saddles.

If you Good Image search for "American Saddlery" it's the first saddle that pops up.
The seat is super comfortable, but it's not overflowing with padding, so as you can see, it gets you really close to the horse. Basically the deepest seat you can get without going treeless.
