Balancing in the western saddle?
I do barrel racing and I have some problems balancing in my saddle! I always depend on the saddle horn and i use it for everything! But all the horses i ride Always end up bucking so i get scared and grab on to the saddle horn for the rest on the time!! I need both hand with my mare because she still is young and i need to get her ready for a big competition soon! How do i get that balance and confidence? are there any exercises you recommend? Please no criticizing, just help me get through it!
Sounds like you have had your confidence shattered by poorly trained horses a few too many times. I had the same problem for a long time too. I had very little confidence in my riding and used the horn as a safety net.
I think you need to ride a well broke, calm horse to build your confidence. It will also improve your riding skills if you don't have to worry about a skittish or naughty horse bucking on you. When you are feeling more confident, stop holding that horn when you ride green horses. Every time you grab the horn, assign yourself some unpleasent task (bucket scrubbing, stall cleaning, etc.). This made me stop touching the horn in a week.
Also, when you are riding, sit deep and relax. Concentrate on moving with the horse.
