a few questions?(barrel racing)?
im 17 so i dont know alot yet so im asking to learn so please dont judge(:
1. what is the Best brand of barrel racing saddle to buy?
2.what kind of bit should i use?
3.Since barrel racing saddles are smaller than other saddles is there any different way to make sure it properly fits my horse?
4. shoes or no shoes?
i have seen other people that own barrel horses & use them to compete have unshod horses.
5.When my horse is ready to compete how do i find events in my area ?
( i know this will be in a year or 2)
6. should i go to barrel racing events in my area & watch them
to see what horses theyre using what saddles & to know the scores
(such as the scores ill need to even place in events when my horse is ready to compete)
7.whats the avarage times that most horses run
(not pro like highschool rodeos)

im tring to find someone now to teach me i do not plan to train my horse my self

1. I love my Bob Marshall, but they are not beginner friendly. Triple Creeks, Martha Josey's and the Circle Y Proven are good saddles. For a beginner I think some of the nicest affordable saddles are Pro-Riders.

2. That will depend on your horse and his training. I went through close to 10 bits with my mare til I had her at her top game and working the best in one bit.
3. Barrel racing saddles are not smaller than any other saddle out there unless you buy one with SQHB. Most come in FQHB and even wider. Barrel racers are liking the big and stocky horses.
4. I shoe because that's what my horse does best in. I know quite a few people who's horses are barefoot and they're still pulling checks.
5.Join your local NBHA district (you could have to travel up to 2 hours for a show). IBRA has districts as well. Look to your local arenas for jackpots. Here in Florida we have floridabarrelhorses.com that lists pretty much all of our events.
6. You should go watch, but don't copy what someone else is doing because it might not work for your horse. You will see good people and bad people, different styles of turning, etc. It's good just to see how different horses can run.
7. At our local jackpots a high 14, low 15 typically wins. On a standard pattern a high 16 wins it. My district is very competitive with a few NBHA World Champs and Kim Landry.
A word of advice. NEVER let your horse drop his shoulder on a turn that is what creates horses that shoulder barrels. A horse should have his shoulder up while making a turn so they remain balanced. My mare has never hit a barrel in the entire time we've been running and we run low 16's.

barrel horse should have:
long head
shorter legs below the knee
top of the tail should be super low (something about a length something)
a shorter neck
the horse must love to run and a fidgety horse makes a good barrel horse.
short back
long belly
and a nice slopping back
