Bits? BARREL RACING?
This year I took one of my Mares to the fair. I used her for Pleasure and Gaming. (Western). Anyway i used a tom thumb on her for everything. Simply just because She runs right through a snaffle and i have control. Though in pleasure she was fine in games she had trouble turning. Im not sure why. I have decided just to use her for games since she is now VERY hyped up anytime i ride her. What type of bit should i use? I need something that gives me a lot of control, is not a snaffle or something mild as that, and i can do Barrels, poles, etc.
there are very many different types of bits its really hard to suggest a bit without seeing your horse and the way you ride it but for barrel racing I can suggest a few different bits to try that i have had success with I love the brown futurity bit have used it on alot of my barrel horses it isa combination bit with a twisted wire and dog bone mouth piece short shanked witha rope nose piece it is made by reinsman if your horse has alot of flex and bend you might try a beetle hack just to help guide her around the barrel I also have had luck with the draw gags they give you more control than a o or d ring snaffle wonder bits are also nice for giving more control thana standard snaffel as they also have the draw action to them gag bits are also nice there are also a lot of different combo bits if you need more whoa I would try a ported mouth piece remember when you are trying bits out the smaller the mouth piece the harsher the bit is gonna be and always use bit guards you never know when a bit might be pinching your horses mouth causing it to sore it up also take into consideration about the shank of the bit also i perfer short shank to long shank not to many horses need the longer shank if you have a experienced barrel racer to help you they should be able to watch you and your horse and help pick a bit to meet you and your horses needs also it might not be just a bit problem have someone watch you closely when your running a set a nd see if you are cuing your horse right you might be throwing her off by using your legs hands or body position in the wrong way or your timing could be off if you have any other ?'s you can email me well good luck and remeber just go out there and have fun

My Horse, and Barrel Racing?
i want to do barrel racing. i have a twenty year old arabian and thats the only horse that i have and he is only trained in western pleasure what should i do?
First, make sure your Arabian is fit and healthy (Don't worry about speed: #1 Arabians usually have some speed to the them. #2 You can get a good to decent time on a slow horse if you have nice turns).
Check out Charmayne James (www.charmaynejames.com) and Martha Josey (www.marthajosey.com). They are both really awesome barrel racers that have great DVDs, videos, and books that can help you with starting your mare.
Before you even start your horse on barrels, you need to feel her out. Is he extremely responsive to your hands and legs? If not, work on moving off the leg (i.e. sidepassing, leg yielding), softening to the bridle, flexing horizontally, stopping, backing up, and breaking at the poll (Clinton Anderson's Downunder Horsemanship). Try to teach him spins on the forehand and hindquarters (start from the ground). You want to be able to place his head and any part of his body ANYWHERE. Try some other dressage maneuvers, too. They're great for teaching all of this.
Next, you need to evaluate yourself with a critical eye. Are you the rider you need to be to successfully train your horse? Or do you need to improve? Are you hands and legs soft? Do you know how to ask for different things? If you find you aren't as good as you need to be, try to improve. Think about your postion as you ride. Always try to make yourself a better rider. Also, educate yourself about what you need to do.
Basically, your goal in training your mare is a collected, perfect turn. That means that you want your turn to be a nice, round circle about 3 feet off the barrel. It's a long (and sometimes very frustrating) process to train a barrel horse. You 'll want to start by walking him up to the barrel. Stop an back up a few steps. Then, with both hands on the reins, slightly raised, guide her around the barrel in a PERFECT CIRCLE about 3 feet from the barrel. Use your outside leg to keep his hind end and hip from drifting out. Keep his nose tipped to the inside and overfinish the turn (to facing the third). Then, continue to the second and third. There are other drills you can do such as rights and lefts (as Charmayne James calls them), Sherry Cervi's circles that keep getting tighter around the barrel, and Martha Josey's funnel barrels. Such drills keep your horse interested and cued in to you.
This was really just telling you about the perfect barrel. You need more instruction and help. You can attend clinics, get a trainer, or watch DVDs and read books. You might consider subscribing to the Barrel Horse News. They have really useful articles.
