Is there a manure catcher for riding horses?
I enjoy riding my horse through town, but the city folk have a problem with the droppings (can't imagine why). I've seen poop bags that attach to carriage horses' harnesses, but need a way to keep my riding horse's droppings off the ground. I use a Western saddle. Any ideas?
Also, what other solutions have you found? Small shovel+garbage bag? What about if the horse poops where there isn't a safe place to tie him/her while you clean?
gallop: Thanks, I saw that site but didn't find the one for riding horses. That's spectacular!
I have ridden through lots of towns, and it's just plain rude to leave horseshit on the ground where people will have to walk through or around it, or smell it. It would only create bad feelings against you and all horse people, if you left it there. This is what makes towns make laws against horses.
Yes, there are 'diaper bags' for riding, as well as for horses in harness. It would be ideal if you emptied the bag as soon as possible after each 'dump' - it will get heavy and rub if it isn't emptied promptly.
On the other hand, one time as I was returning from a ride, I got off to kick some poop under a bush. It was on a rarely-used sidewalk but I didn't want it to be there in view, especially close to my pasture where everyone would know it was my fault. Some maniac drove by and yelled at me *for cleaning it up*. I kind of blew him off, but he followed our group (the others had gone ahead to the pasture, just a couple blocks away). He stopped and yelled more. We called the cops after he first followed us to the pasture. The cop came, took a statement and said that there is no law against riding or horses pooping on the sidewalk, and we were under no legal obligation to clean it up. He took our description of the a**hole's car and went back to the apartment building to have a chat with him. The cop tried to get the guy to calm down, but only after writing him a ticket for disorderly conduct and threatening behavior, did the guy start to calm down and realize he was only making trouble for himself.
I am almost always able to find or ask for a cardboard box to pick up the poop, and either toss it in a dumpster or among some hungry plants that would hide it and enjoy its nourishment. If there's no place to tie the horse, I just hold the reins/lead while I work.

After the bank robbers had been, what did the townsfolk live on?
One of the favourite scenes in the old American westerns is when the baddies ride into town, guns blazing and rob the bank, shoot a few people, upturn the saloon, and then ride out again, their horses heavy with money bags.
In the movies, everything carries on as normal, the townsfolk organise a possee, and eventually there is a show-down when the new Marshall, a bloke in a white hat who gives his life to law and order faces the chief baddie in the street in a duel, and kills said baddie, before riding out of town in the sunset with the town's prettiest girl on the back of his saddle.
In real life, if all the money had gone, what did the townsfolk pay their bills with?
[and yes, there is a direct parallel situation in modern times, currently being discussed at the Liberal Democrat conference]
Like all banks, most of the depositor's money wasn't there. It was out in loans. It would be just the cash on hand that got robbed.
Although, if there was a big employer in town, say a mine, the bank robbers would hit on payday.
